The Canton
Lions varsity football team lost a division battle against the Westland
Comets Sunday, 34-12. Falling behind by several scores, the Lions
battled back with touchdown runs from Kenny Arnold and James Hall to
get to within 26-12. A late-third quarter interception deep in Comets'
territory stopped a potential score that would have pulled the Lions to
within one TD.
Ben Cockrum and Robert Daoud also contributed in the backfield.
Contributing to strong offensive-line play for the Lions were Nathan
Dzwonkas, Manmeet Singh, John Schumaker, Dykiece Pruitt and Austin
Fisher. Defensive standouts were Devon Wade, Val Steeple, Anthony
Kenney and James Hall, who had several sacks.
JV UNIT
TRIUMPHANT
The Lions JV contingent earned a hard-fought Homecoming win,
20-10, to improve to 3-1. Jake Stropes, Jakob Wickens and Austin
Jackson helped the offensive line open up gaping holes for Freddie
McGhee, Chucky Turfe and Daniel Kilgore. Both McGhee and Turfe had
touchdowns.
The defense only allowed one touchdown late in the game thanks
to great efforts by Ty Jasman, Damarcus Kaigler, Cordell Gibson IV and
Matthew Wayne. The defense came up with key turnovers and fourth-down
stops the entire afternoon.
FRESHMEN ROLL
OVER COMETS
The Lions freshmen team throttled the Comets, 39-12. They were
led by two receiving TD's from Evan Voyles to Myles Beverly and
touchdown runs by Noah Brown, Victor Abraham and Jason Arnold. The line
opened large holes all day led by the blocking of Spencer Brown, David
Mason and Wesley Askew
The defense had a strong day led by key tackles form Mason
Lamarand, Adam Pitcole, Jack Underwood, Ryan Cassidy, Devin Farmer,
Adam Abdallah and a long interception return for a touchdown by Woody
See.
JUNIOR
FRESHMEN BLANK COMETS
The junior freshmen registered their third straight shutout
thanks to the hard-hitting efforts of Kyle Hurley, Nathan Hunt, Preston
Parana, Gary Hicks and David Bowen. The offense had a strong effort led
by the blocking of Ethan Locke, Michael Lindeman, Justin Crouch, Calvin
Brown, Jr., and Kameron Arnold.
