During Friday night's Class D District championship game against
Washtenaw Christian, Plymouth Christian Academy's girls basketball team
lived up to the motto that is printed on the back of their warm-up
shirts.
The Eagles went hard, then went home -- with their second
straight District championship trophy.
PCA soared over Washtenaw Christian, 64-21, to advance to
Tuesday's Regional semifinal contest against Camden-Frontier. The
opening tip is set for 5 p.m. at Wyandotte Mt. Carmel High School.
The Eagles raced to a 12-7 first-quarter lead and never looked
back, expanding their cushion to 31-12 at the half and 42-19 with eight
minutes to play.
The only drama left during the latter part of the game was
whether or not every Eagle on the roster would score.
They did.
Kristen Malcolm and Brooke Purcell topped the winners' scoring
ledger with 14 points each. Breanna Harris contributed seven points and
Jessica Soblesky added two points to go along with five assists and
three steals.
Malcolm also registered eight rebounds and two blocks while
Purcell added seven rebounds and three steals.
Harris turned in her usual strong floor game, adding six steals
and four assists.
"We played very well tonight," said PCA coach Carol Gerulis. "We
pressed a little in the first half, then we took it off. We moved the
ball well and got to the rim.
"We played together as a team. Everyone scored, too, which was
nice."
The Eagles earned a spot in the title game thanks to a 55-12
rout of Calvary Christian on Wednesday.
