There was a lot at stake for
the Plymouth and Canton girls tennis teams Tuesday as the final round
of KLAA South Division matches unfolded.
If the Wildcats defeated Westland John Glenn and Canton upended
Livonia Churchill, the two PCEP squads would have shared the South
Division title with the Chargers, who entered the day unbeaten.
Plymouth short-circuited the Rockets, 7-2, but the Chiefs
dropped a tight 6-3 decision to the Chargers, who earned the division
title with a 5-0 mark.
"It was a tough loss, but there were some great matches,"
said Canton coach Barb Lehmann. "Our No. 4 singles player, Sydney
Liedel and our No. 1 doubles team of Kayla Davis and Brittany Vance
went undefeated in the division. They are ready for the cross-over
matches and the conference tournament."
Churchill won three of the four singles matches, led by No. 1
player Paige Fallu's 7-5, 6-2 victory over Megan Leung and No. 2 player
Nicole Kruso's 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Canton's Taylor Eppler.
At No. 3 singles, Churchill's Mara Karageozian edged Canton's
Jaclyn Hollingsworth, 6-4, 6-3, but Liedel kept the Chiefs' hopes alive
with a straight-set victory over Shelby Cohen.
"Sydney controlled the court and maintained her focus," said
Lehmann. "It just wasn't Jaclyn's day. The luck was on the wrong side
of the net."
Davis and Vance outlasted Churchill's Kristi Walker and Valerie
Rose, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, in a three-set thriller.
Churchill won at No. 2 doubles as Nikki Fata and Quiney Banini
defeated Kelsey Mason and Catherine Sanctorum, 6-2, 6-4; and at No. 3
where Jayde Schultz and Caitlin Griffith rallied to nip Janani Shanmuga
and Kaitlyn Bunyak, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Canton's Samantha Klott and Hayley Cook won an exciting match at
No. 4 doubles, 3-6, 7-6(8), 7-5, over Krista Fata and Maria Paul, but
Churchill's Lauren Patla and Becky Snyder hung on to oust Lauren Tomei
and Neena Baghaie, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 match.
Plymouth rolled over the Rockets to finish 4-1 in the South. The
Wildcats' top two players -- No. 1 Sarah Mitchell and No. 2 Priya Joshi
-- got things going as Mitchell swept Latina Yacks, 6-1, 6-0, while
Joshi knocked off Louissa Villaroman, 6-3, 7-5.
Lindsay Stemberger won, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3, but Mandy Martin
dropped a high-intensity three-setter to Sara Aulidge, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Plymouth won four of the five doubles matches. Its only
setback came at No. 1 doubles, where Allison Santori and Lauren Jeong
were edged, 7-6(5), 7-6(1), by Desiree Clenney and Shannon McDadden.
The Wildcats' No. 2 duo of Kayla Griffey and Britta Swanson
outswung Sabrina Lawrence and Jamatha Johnson, 7-5, 6-3, while the No.
3 team of Andrea Haidar and Brittany Rose, dominated Emily White and
Montana Graszak, 6-1, 6-2.
Plymouth's doubles success continued in the No. 4 match as Annie
McKenzie and Iulia Fratila blanked Natasha Hawkins and Khadiah McCloud,
6-0, 6-0. The No. 5 team of Jahnvi Patel and Mariah Tesarz closed out
the triumphant day by handling Damini Patel and Halie Woody, 6-1, 6-0.
Salem closed out Central Division play with a convincing 8-1
victory over Livonia Stevenson to finish with a 3-2 record.
Led by Allie Carpenter's 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Laura
Gumpper at No. 1, the Rocks won all four singles matches. Also earning
points for coach Lin Ware's squad were No. 2 player Anna Norman, a 6-0,
6-3 victor over Ashley Benvenuti; No. 3 Morgan Spencer, a 6-0, 6-0
winner over Taylor Tinham; and No. 4 Kerry MacDonald, a 6-1, 6-1 winner
over Meyessa Mansour.
Leading the 4-1 doubles onslaught for the Rocks was the No. 1
tandem of Rachel Norman and Ashley Davis, who slammed Michele DeBeaudry
and Emily Plumley, 6-1, 6-2.
Also winning doubles matches for Salem were the No. 2 team of
Mallory Rojo and Ashley Walker, who outlasted Simona Enea and Lexie
Ranski, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2; the No. 3 duo of Alex Lamb and Olivia Gonzalez,
who swept Lauren Arsenault and Allison Kay, 6-3, 6-2; and the No. 5
team of Emily Simmons and Lindsey Spaulding, who won a thrilling
three-setter over Emily Baumgartner and Kelsey Futrell, 3-6, 7-6(5),
7-5.
The Rocks' lone doubles setback came in the No. 4 match where
Stevenson's Kathryn Malkowski and Andrea Burford defeated Ewa Zajac and
Bansari Patel, 6-2, 6-1.

Plymouth's Allison Santori (above) and Lauren Jeong dropped a tight
7-6(5), 7-6(1) decision at No. 1 doubles Tuesday against John Glenn.
