Lewis's record-setting day not enough for
Wildcat runners

Freshmen aren't supposed to
be doing the things Plymouth ninth-grader Madi Lewis is doing on tracks
this spring.
But the blazing fast track star keeps doing it, week after week.
Lewis, who has never met a stop watch she didn't like, broke a
pair of school records in Tuesday's 87-50 setback to visiting Livonia
Churchill. She broke her own record in the 100-meter hurdles by posting
a time of 16.1 seconds -- 3.5 seconds faster than Churchill's best
finisher.
A little over an hour later, Lewis knocked Stephanie Okolo off
the top of the Plymouth leader board in the 200-meter dash when she
cruised around the track in 25.83 seconds.
"She's something else," said Plymouth coach Ricky Styes. "Madi
fell in the 100 hurdles last week at the City Meet. For a lot of
hurdlers, it's tough the next time out because you have that in the
back of your mind, but it didn't bother her at all.
"To break a record owned by Stephanie Okolo is pretty special --
especially to do it as a freshman."
The loss was the Wildcats' first dual-meet setback of the
season, dropping them to 2-1 in the KLAA South Division. Churchill
improved to 3-0.
"Traditionally, they've been the best team in the division,"
said Styes. "We knew they were going to be tough, and they were. We
tweaked a few things and it cost us. We fell into an early hole, but
the girls kept battling."
