12U Cards dealing foes a lot of L's

JUNE 12, 2010, 10:05 p.m.

The 12U Canton Cardinals travel baseball team is sizzling in the first two weeks of June, going 4-1 in the Kensington Valley Baseball and Softball Association.

The Cards were back in action June 1, coming off their championship win in Canton over the Memorial Day weekend.   The boys looked sluggish and ended up losing 9-4 to the Saline Swarm.

It was back home on June 2 to host the Michigan Blue Jays.   Pitchers Griffin Shiminski and Kevin Anthony combined to hold the Blue Jays to one hit over five innings. Strong hitting from Andrew Hejka, Ravi Mahanti, Seth Hubbard, Grant Hartwig and Trevor McManus lifted the Cards to an 11-1 victory.

The team traveled to South Lyon on June 3 to face the Thunder and after the first three innings it looked like the Cardinals were caught in a storm.  But the Canton bats started making some noise in the 4th, putting up seven runs on seven hits.

Pitcher Frankie Bellino was called to the mound in the 5th.  The righty silenced the Thunder and the Cardinals headed home with a 15-10 win.

After a baseball-free weekend, the action resumed June 7, with Canton looking to get some revenge on the Northville Broncos.  With a 1-0 loss to this KVBSA powerhouse still fresh on their minds, the Cardinals stormed out of the gate behind outstanding pitching from Hubbard.  The big righty threw three perfect innings, striking out eight of nine batters.  Anthony followed with a strong performance to hold the Broncos to one hit in Canton’s 7-1 victory.

Head Coach Dan Hejka Sr. likes what he’s seeing from his boys.

  “
We fared pretty well the past week against some very well coached teams," Hejka said.  "Our bats bailed us out in a few situations.  That was nice to see.”

The Cardinals will play in the Macomb County Challenge in Mt. Clemens this weekend.
