Judging by the results of
Wednesday's double-header against Canton, Westland John Glenn's
baseball team could have used a few Snickers bars.
The Rockets may not have hit like Betty White, but they
were white-washed by Canton starting pitchers Andrew Tidwell and Ryan
Bazner, who both carried no-hitters into the fifth innings of their
respective starts.
Tidwell settled for a three-hit victory in the Chiefs' 7-2
opening-game victory. The senior sub-mariner lowered his earned-run
average to 1.05 and upped his record to 4-0.
John Glenn starting pitcher Spencer Dowd was as effective as
Tidwell until the fourth when the Chiefs manufactured a run to grab a
1-0 lead.
Canton added a pair of runs in the fifth and four more in the
seventh. The Rockets finally solved Tidwell in the bottom of the
seventh when they plated a pair of runs.
"The guys stepped up like they should," said Canton coach Mark
Blomshield, whose team improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the KLAA
South Division. "Andrew did a good job of keeping their hitters off
balance. He's improved a lot since last year.
"Their pitcher threw well, too. He had a really nice deuce
(curveball)."
Powering the Chiefs' offense in game one were Seth Tschetter and
Joe Galanty, both of whom contributed two hits and two RBI.
Bazner tossed a one-hitter in Chiefs' five-inning 11-0 victory
in the nightcap, yielding just an up-the-middle single in the fifth.
The junior struck out seven and walked just one batter.
Canton's 12-hit effort in game two was led by Cody Blakita,
Tidwell and Tschetter, each of whom ripped a pair of hits.
