The effort was there for Salem's girls basketball team Tuesday night, but the Rocks' shooting touch left the building.

In the season opener for both teams, Salem dropped a 49-37 decision to visiting Brighton in the Rocks' gym.

"I thought we played really hard," said Salem coach Fred Thomann. "But we didn't shoot well at all. One of our strengths is our ability to shoot well, but we didn't do it tonight. We'll go back to the drawing board and get ready for Thursday night's game against Ann Arbor Huron."

The Bulldogs never trailed after busting out to a 13-8 first-quarter advantage. They took a 21-17 lead into the half before building a 38-27 cushion in the pivotal third quarter.

"The third quarter is what did us in," said Thomann. "We didn't play well that quarter and we gave up 17."

Senior captain Sara Stone led all scorers with 13 points. Brett de Bear added 11 and Rachel Norman chipped in with five.

  Stone pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
